In 1961, Michael Foucault published his now famous book History of Madness. Foucault attempts to document the history and validity of modern psychiatric practice. Is psychiatry truly founded on scientific principals or is it just a series of subjective judgments? Gary Gutting, professor of philosophy at Notre Dame, applies Foucault’s concerns about the moral judgments psychiatrists make to the new revisions regarding depression in the latest edition of the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” (DSM).
