A Firm Grasp on Comfort

As any parent of a toddler knows, a beloved blankie or teddy or some other toy or object, is not just a piece of cloth or a stuffed animal. In 1953, Dr. Donald Woods Winnicott coined the phrase, “transitional object” in a paper presented to the British Psycho-Analytical Society. In this presentation, Dr. Winnicott contended that the child knows the object is not his mother but sees it as more than just a toy or a comforting item. It is a way to deal with separation and new experiences that might be frightening or unfamiliar. Some objects even take on the role of an imaginary friend, for example, Winnie the Pooh.
