Choosing a Practical Major

Philip A. Bean, an associate dean and dean of academic affairs at Haverford College, is often asked by aspiring students what they should choose as a major. Students who want to pursue women’s studies or art history, for example, are often asked, “What are you going to do with a degree in that?” But Bean points out that the reason people pursue college educations is to hone their efforts to identify and define complex issues through research and analysis. He also states that, surprisingly, students with a major in humanities are as likely to be accepted to medical school as those with a major in science.
