Five Disorders Share Genetic Risk Factors

A study recently published in the online version of LANCET purports to have found genetic issues for five different types of mental illnesses: schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, autism, major depression and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The importance of these findings is that doctors are attempting to diagnose mental illness based on genetic anomalies rather than symptoms of the disease or disorder. The scientists conducting the study pointed out that this does not mean identifying a disease is simple; there may be hundreds of genes and variations involved.
