I’m Sorry: Sometimes Not Enough, Sometimes Too Much

“I’m sorry” are two words that can be flippant, insincere, or incomplete.  They can also dissolve hostility, encourage forgiveness, and mend damaged relationships. If you’re male, you may not say them often enough. If you’re female, you may say them too often. One explanation for the differences between how often men and women apologize is found in a recent set of studies by Karina Shumann and Michael Ross, which showed that men’s lower rate of apology is due to a “higher threshold for what constitutes offensive behavior.”  Women reported committing more offenses than men.
