Boosting an individual’s low self-esteem is a difficult, and not always successful, process. A person’s view of himself or herself is derived from a lifetime of experience. Just telling people that they are worthwhile or encouraging people to repeat “I am lovable” as a mantra does not work. One study showed that such tactics actually lowered participants’ self-esteem. In addition to self-perception, people with low self-esteem often wonder why their partners want to be with them. A new study was recently conducted which helped improve the participants’ views of themselves as well as how they viewed their partners and their relationships. Honesty and creative thinking helped guide this research.
