Author David Roberts echoes the feelings of many when he writes about the Newtown, Connecticut tragedy. Because we cannot be with our children 24/7, he contends that we need to care about others’ children just as we would have others care about ours. He goes on to cite how this caring needs to become “global” and that we need to ensure that all children, worldwide, have our concern and empathy. He talks about how decisions we make today will affect future generations - decisions regarding energy and climate as well as gun control. Roberts states that, despite the horrifying media images of senseless acts of violence, we are making headway towards reducing poverty, hunger, and disease.
