In his book, “Monkey Mind: A Memoir of Anxiety”, Daniel Smith discusses anxiety and the myriads of ways it has affected his life. Just as his father’s anxiety was completely different from his mother’s, David’s anxiety is completely different from his brother’s. David shares with us, sometimes humorously, how his anxiety affected his college life. Through the years, he has gone from believing that “anxiety is our best teacher” to realizing that it’s not anxiety that teaches, it’s the struggle to live well in spite of it. To do that, he has learned from his brother, that qualities such as simplicity, mindfulness, pragmatism and stoicism are needed to succeed.
