Most people feel too connected to their electronic devices. Checking texts and emails has become like a tic, a hard habit to break. Companies are coming to realize that employees need to be disconnected occasionally to help with ultimate long-term productivity. In an experiment with the six-person team at the Boston Consulting Group, each person was given one night off per week. Starting at 6PM that person would be unreachable electronically, though if a situation arose that only that person could handle, he or she would be informed. They also participated in weekly team discussions about how the process was working. Surprisingly, team members felt empowered and more satisfied with their work-life balance.
