Mindfulness has become quite fashionable in today’s new age culture, being touted as a magical panacea that can help us eliminate stress and improve our overall health, but what exactly is it? Janice Marturano, who helped start the Mindful Leadership Forum at General Mills, describes it as “intentionally paying attention to the present nonjudgementally.” There are several techniques that are helpful, such as sitting in a quiet spot and focusing our attention on something such as our breathing. On a deeper level, it really is about getting out of auto-pilot. Many of us will focus on tomorrow’s meeting while brushing our teeth, instead of just being present to the act of brushing our teeth.
