A Seasonal Pattern to Mental Health

Are mental illnesses affected by seasons? A recent study of Google search patterns indicates they are. Researchers studied searches in the United States and Australia for topics related to mental illness, including anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, depression, suicide, ADHD, and schizophrenia. Although there were variations, they found definite seasonal patterns of highs in the winter and lows in the summer. It's unclear if the results are related to increased incidence or not, but it's known that the reduced daylight, physical activity, levels of vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids associated with winter can affect moods.
