Living alone is one of the least discussed and most poorly understood issues of our time. Although some regard living alone as anathema, living alone is “the most prominent residential type.” In his book, Going Solo, Eric Klinenberg explores the history of and the social attitudes toward living alone. In the ancient world only death was a more severe punishment than exile, and Aristotle claimed that a man who had no need for society was either a beast or a god. In today’s modern world, when more people live alone than ever before, living alone is presented as a social problem, a sign of narcissism, fragmentation, and a diminished public life.
