In Therapy Forever? Enough Already

How much therapy is enough?  One study found that patients improved most dramatically between their seventh and tenth sessions.  Another study looked at 2,000 people who had from 1 to 12 sessions, and found that 88% improved after one session, with the rate dropping to 62% after 12.  According to psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert, anxiety and depression are the top predicaments for which most people seek help.  These problems don't take years of therapy to be resolved.  Some patients can resolve their issues in less than a whole session.  Alpert feels it's a matter of approach.  He believes that "active, engaging and extroverted therapists" help patients more quickly than "cautious, nonintrusive therapists" do.I disagree profoundly with Alpert's views.
