Despite our advances in other areas of medicine and our acceptance of those who suffer from physical challenges or disease, misunderstanding and the stigma attached to those who suffer from mental illness abound. This stigma can have devastating effects, preventing people from accessing the support and professional help they need and causing their condition to worsen, possibly to the point of suicide. Too many people dismiss mental illness as something others can simply conquer with will power, believing mental illness is not a “real” disease such as diabetes or cancer. Other destructive attitudes include the beliefs that people with mental illnesses are weak, don’t live productive lives, or only need medication, and not therapy. Mental health experts have come together to combat these attitudes.
