It has become increasingly clear that primary care physicians, pediatricians, obstetrician-gynecologists and internists must be more alert to depression in parents. A parent’s depression can be linked to many problems in the family, including how the children are cared for and how they fare. Parental depression can lead to negative consequences for the kids, ranging from poor school performance, more visits to the emergency room, and adolescent depression. When parents receive the help they need, families are much better off. For doctors, asking parents about their mental health can feel intrusive or like they’re blaming the parent.
