Successfully Changing Bad Behavior

David Brooks, an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times, recently published an email from a British father of three adult children. In the email, the father castigates his offspring for being unsuccessful non-achievers in spite of their rather privileged upbringing and education. He ends his letter by telling his children to stop whining and asking for hand-outs. Brooks states that, while this may help the father - and it has, indeed, made him a folk-hero of sorts in Britain - it does nothing to change the behavior of his adult children. Beating someone over the head with a bagful of bad behavior is not likely to produce any of the desired or hoped-for results according to Brooks.
