There’s an old story about a man who buys a beautiful suit that will only fit if he “wears it properly”. According to the suit maker he should bend his knee, pull his arm up, bend his elbow and raise his shoulders almost to his ears. In this position the suit fits perfectly. Like this man, many of us twist ourselves into unnatural, uncomfortable postures in order to gain acceptance and approval from others. This twisting leads to diminished self-worth which, in turn, leads to more unnatural posturing. We can be so focused on what we think others expect of us that we fail to recognize our own needs.
