Most of us have had to face creating or updating a resume, gathering together past work and school information and experiences, and all of the other paraphernalia associated with job hunting. Included in this list is often one or more letters of recommendation from supervisors, professors, clients, and co-workers. What one job-seeker recently discovered is that letters of recommendation are often different for women than for men. Writers often describe women as “warm, kind, and personable,” while men are described as “assertive, ambitious, and independent.” Research indicates that women may actually be at a disadvantage based solely on letters of recommendation.
