There are 10 recognized syndromes that constitute a personality disorder, and self-help books occupy yards of shelf space in bookstores and libraries. But the disorders are difficult to diagnose and treat and often lost in the quest to help a patient’s depression or anxiety. Personality problems are nothing new. They are referenced in Greek plays and mythology as well as the Bible. People who have personality disorders do not exhibit periodic symptoms. Their problems are neither psychotic nor neurotic. Rather, they exhibit issues stemming from deeply rooted thoughts and feelings. Currently, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) is finding itself in an internal struggle as it attempts to adopt a new diagnostic system for personality disorders.
